Spring into a New Season: How to Prep for Summer

Spring into a New Season: How to Prep for Summer

With Wendy Serrano

Just as the seasons change, it’s a great opportunity for us to take some personal inventory and shake up our own routines. Welcome to September and welcome to Spring! September is bright, abundant, and fertile—think of all the seeds and hard work you’ve harvested in winter, getting ready to sprout! Or perhaps you really took the time to bunker down, cocoon, and hibernate. Either way, the warmer days ahead of us invite us to make the most of our routines and finish off the year strong.

Here are some of my favourite ways to use Springtime as a bit of “prep” into Summer and the silly season ahead:

Establish a Solid Morning Routine (and One That You Actually Enjoy)

The sun is rising earlier, the days are longer. Come September, it’s time to reset our body to nature’s own rhythmic clock. Establishing a beautiful morning routine you actually enjoy is key to making the most of the warmer days ahead. It sets you up with stillness, momentum, and also creates a positive effect on your brain, having something to look forward to the next day! It doesn’t have to be lengthy (forget the 5-9 before 9-5); just take some time to carve out moments for you. I like to time block my morning routine:

  • 40 minutes of exercise (a walk or a gym class)
  • 20 minutes of breakfast and mindful eating
  • 10 minutes of stillness (journaling or meditating)

That’s just over 1 hour!

Start to Incorporate Different Foods into Your Day

You can check out my previous story on living seasonally here, but spring is a great time to start incorporating those yummy, seasonal fruits and veggies. Just as we transition into a spring/summer wardrobe, so should our grocery lists and diet!

Start introducing cooler foods (like your salads and smoothies) and ensure you are eating enough to keep up with your daily output. We tend to exercise a little more during the warmer seasons and venture outside a lot more. Be sure to stay hydrated and eat enough protein for energy levels. I like to add my Plant-Based Look Well into everything. I add it to my morning oats, my smoothies, or sometimes just on its own if I have had an intense gym session. Before and after is always a treat!

Look Well is a supplement that targets cellular renewal, immunity, and digestion, supporting overall wellness and vitality. The Fava Bean provides your body with protein and nutrients to fuel you in your everyday life and helps you feel your best at all times. And it tastes so delicious!

Cleanse, Clear, and Clean

Everything is energy. And in order to welcome the new (spring energy), it’s time to let go of the old. The stagnant. Perhaps any heaviness left behind from winter. I encourage my clients to spring clean their house (think pantries, fridge, even wardrobe!).

Spring clean your desk at work, your car, the kids' toy box, even your makeup bag! As we adapt and change into the new season, our bodies and minds need and crave different elements. Lean into that and create space for fresh, fertile energy.

Get Crystal Clear on Your 2024 Goals

We have just over 4 months until a new year rolls in (can you believe it?). Now is the time to revisit those goals you created at the start of the year. Maybe the trajectory has changed…and that’s okay. Maybe you’ve got the energy to finally start that new thing you can’t stop thinking about. I always encourage my clients to look at this with grace, ease, and non-judgment. It’s not to chastise yourself on what you haven’t done, but to empower and inspire you on what you can still get done.

If you’re stuck on getting clear on what these goals look like, here are some of my favourite journal prompts:

  • What is something in my life that has been draining me, that I am ready to let go of?
  • How do I want to feel by the end of the year?
  • What can I spend my energy on in the next 4 months that will serve me and my goals?
  • Are there any new boundaries I need to create to fully embody this next version of me?

Here are some more tips on how to create lasting change for the end of 2024:

  • Write it down: You increase your likelihood of reaching your goals when you write down what you want to achieve. Habit tracking can also be powerful.
  • Find your support system: Let others know what you are working on and how they can support you and keep you accountable.
  • Leave behind all-or-nothing thinking: This is stressful, overwhelming, and can be defeating. Something is better than nothing. Be kind to yourself.
  • Celebrate the small wins: Celebrate the work you are putting in and let those wins be the motivation you need.

Find an Exercise Routine You Actually Love

Similar to your morning routine, finding an exercise routine you actually love will help you stick to your goals. It might be time to lock in a PT, join a run club, or try a new yoga class with a friend. Having accountability and someone to support you always helps me ensure I show up for my session. And little by little, week by week, I am getting closer to my goals. I also encourage my clients to sit down at the start of the week and lock these times away like a meeting with yourself. Schedule them in your calendar—they are non-negotiables!

And don’t forget to supplement your workouts with our delicious Plant-Based Look Well for optimal vitality and recovery.

Boost Your Gut Health and Immunity Just in Time for the Silly Season

The silly, social season is usually a time for parties, social events, foods we don’t normally eat within our routines, and celebratory drinks! Use this time now to really build your gut integrity and ensure you have a strong foundation before the silly season is in full swing. This will help give you a head start when you are looking to “recover” from Christmas and ensure your immunity is well in-tact.

My favourite supplement to support me with this are Look Well (Plant Protein Super Greens) Mango.
